Where I live (central Ohio) you could have a semi-custom 4-BR 4000SF house probably on some acreage. If you’re willing to live in a smaller house, you could have a small ‘gentleman’s farm’ with 5-10 acres and maybe a few horses. There’s even a ‘hunt club’ down the road where they fox hunt several times a year.
Your choice, flat dweller in UK or landed gentry in USA ;-)

I live in upstate NY and I live in a 6 bedroom 2.5 bath house, and that would sell for about $250,000. Lets just say for 300,000 you could buy a very very very nice house, in a very nice area.

a lot cheaper, even places like la and vegas are cheaper than our cities

For $359,000, you could live anywhere you like and get the house you described.
Los Angeles and Boston are the most expensive cities, followed by NY and Chicago.
LA and Boston would normally be pushing it on your price range, but the housing market in the US is very down right now, so you could find what you are looking for in almost any city in the US.

It really depends on where you want to buy the house in the U.S. For example in Texas, North and South Carolinas, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, for $359000, you can buy up to 3 bed room house in a decent neighborhood (not the top notch localities though). In NY, CA, Massachusetts (esp eastern part), you will be able to buy only a very small house in an average neighborhood and only a 2 bedroom apartment in a decent locality. You can not think about buying anything with that money in the east or west coast close to the major cities like NY, NJ, Boston, Miami,
LA, SF etc to be a few example. US has a greatly diverse housing market in terms of affordability. You must be able to buy an average nice house or apartment with that money if you are not just focussed on the most expensive cities. This amount of money is just about the median price of US homes. I bought a house about 18 months ago and the above is just my educated guess.
USA is the greatest country on the earth, I believe. Come and share the American dream with us…good luck!!
